Luna inspiring women for self employment
Morshalina Akter Luna, 39, is a very successful entrepreneur of Sherpur. Her husband Md. Khokon Mia, 45, is an electrician. Their only daughter, Mivia Jannat Sinha, 12, studies in grade 7.
Morshalina is a memorable woman- overcoming poverty and family hardships- by empowering herself and 23 other women to do block printing, hand embroidery, karchupi, and tailoring. These creative efforts have increased their financial sufficiency and family and social dignity.
Previously, she relied on the small income produced by her husband. She knew she could help support her family, so she searched for opportunities for new skills development training.
As a community based organization (CBO) member, she received block boutique training as well as hand embroidery and Karchupi training from World Vision. After having training on Block Boutique, she started her work at home.
Later she took loan from local cooperative society and added her own capital to extend her business. She established a small boutique factory and trained 23 women from her own community. She block prints on items like three-pieces, fotua, shari, bed sheets and scarfs and also she makes hand embroidery items.
Now, she earns monthly average of Tk.10,000.00 ($1,428). She no longer needs financial assistance from her husband. She manages her money and all the educational expenses for her daughter.
Recently, she started her shop at Sherpur New Market namely ‘Sazzad Store’. There are various items of cloths like as les, three-piece, puti, chumki, hand embroidery, screen print, youk, and tread.
She expressed her heartfelt thanks and gratitude to World Vision for much inspiration and the necessary training.
Morshalina Akter Luna hopes her story will inspire women to empower themselves to be independent.
In Sherpur, World Vision Bangladesh works to build the capacity of the community, especially to empower women.
