Before receiving chickens through an agriculture project funded through World Vision Gifts, life for Chamila and her daughter Piyumi, from Sri Lanka, was a constant struggle.

Chamila spent long hours working in the burning sun for very little pay, bringing Piyumi along with her. "As a mother it made me sad I couldn't send her to school," Chamila explained. "Even when she got sick I had no money for medicine. Anything she needed I could not provide."

Now, thanks to the chickens, Chamila can give Piyumi protein-rich eggs to eat and she can earn enough income from selling eggs to send Piyumi to school. "Words can't explain my joy. I never thought this day would come."

"In the future, I am excited to sell my eggs and grow the chicken coop. World Vision has given me training on using the chicken manure to grow vegetables."

Chamila is now confident about the future. "I will be able to get a good income from the chickens."
