In a joint effort to promote better oral hygiene among children, Unilever Ghana Limited and World Vision Ghana organised a health screening and awareness programme in Adjeikrom, which is part of the Fanteakwa Area Programme in the Eastern Region. The event aimed to educate children about the importance of oral hygiene and equip them with the practical skills needed to maintain good dental health.

Bridget, a dental physician assistant from Begoro District Hospital, led an engaging session on the best oral health practices. She demonstrated the correct brushing technique and emphasised the importance of brushing twice daily: morning and night.

The event benefited over 400 children, all of whom participated in a comprehensive health screening focused on identifying tooth decay and assessing their general oral health. This provided an opportunity for early detection and intervention.

Unilever Ghana Limited, the producers of Pepsodent kids’ toothpaste and toothbrushes, supported the event by providing all the children with oral care products. This ensured that every child left with the tools necessary to maintain their oral health.

During the event, Jean-Claude Mukadi, Interim National Director for World Vision Ghana, encouraged children and parents alike to prioritise oral hygiene.

“Don’t let bad breath put you off, just make sure you clean your mouth twice a day,” he advised.

He also stressed the importance of regular dental check-ups, stating that it is good practice to visit the dentist at least once per year. " Early detection can prevent more serious and expensive problems in the future. Prevention is always better than a cure,” Jean-Claude remarked.

He further encouraged school staff and community leaders to continue reinforcing the oral hygiene lessons, reminding them that teachers and parents alike have a key role to play in helping children develop healthy habits for life.

The event was graced by key stakeholders including representatives from the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Local Council of Churches (LCC), as well as the Director of Strategy and Integrated Programmes (SIPD) at World Vision Ghana’s Director, and the Southern Regional Manager and the Fanteakwa Cluster Manager for World Vision Ghana.

A particular highlight of the day was the captivating drama performance about oral hygiene, presented by the Bosuso Future Leaders Kids Club. This performance creatively reinforced the importance of maintaining good dental practices.

The event concluded with an expression of gratitude from the local community.

In a symbolic gesture, the traditional leaders of Adjeikrom presented Jean-Claude with a beautifully woven kente cloth and bestowed upon him the honorary title of Development Chief Nana Adjei, in recognition of World Vision Ghana’s commitment to child and community development in the area.

World Vision Ghana has expressed its intention to continue to advocate for and support similar initiatives in communities across the country. The organisation has highlighted the need for regular oral health programmes and for collaboration with health authorities.

This event is another significant step in promoting health education and improving the well-being of children in rural Ghana.
