If you visit Kamwala Community-Based Childcare Center (CBCC) in Traditional Authority Mankhambira, Nkhatabay, on a weekday morning, you’ll be greeted by the cheerful laughter of children under five playing together.

This vibrant scene is am evidence of the transformative power of early childhood development (ECD), brought to life by the efforts of World Vision.

The new facility, constructed by World Vision, has drawn about 70 children to Kamwala CBCC, offering them a strong foundation for their future.

The center represents a significant step forward in Malawi's commitment to early childhood education, supported by the 2010 ECD policy that advocates for community-based childcare centres.

Before this intervention, the situation at Kamwala CBCC was dire. Children gathered in dilapidated and overcrowded huts or makeshift spaces, such as a church, that were not conducive for learning and there were no proper learning materials, toys, or trained caregivers.

Kamwala CBCC Chairperson Wisdom Nyamwira vividly recalled the struggles they faced in the past: “Before this development, the children were learning in congested, unsafe spaces with no resources.

Nyamwira added that the lack of proper facilities made it challenging for caregivers to create a conducive learning environment, leaving parents concerned about their children’s safety and early education.

“The transformation began with the introduction of a well-equipped facility that prioritizes the needs of young learners. Now, the center has trained caregivers, materials, toys, and even food when it’s available, “he said.

He said, reflecting on the progress. The addition of these resources has not only improved the quality of education but has also ensured that the children can enjoy a safe and stimulating environment where they can thrive.

“This development has significantly uplifted the spirits of the community. Parents, who once worried about their children’s future, now feel reassured seeing their little ones excited to attend the center.

“For the children, the change has been nothing short of a miracle. Access to educational materials and interactive toys has sparked creativity and curiosity, while the trained caregivers ensure they receive guidance tailored to their developmental stages.

He added that it has brought joy to parents and children alike emphasizing how the center has become a cornerstone for early childhood development in the area.

Chrissy Banda, a local parent, expressed her gratitude.

“As parents, it’s our duty to ensure our children attend ECD before primary school. World Vision not only built this beautiful center but also trained us to make learning materials.

“Now, our children learn manners, language skills, and how to build relationships at an early age. “she said.

Education Taskforce Chairperson Rodwell Kaunda emphasized the importance of ECD in preparing children for primary school.
