Print-Rich Walls Bring Learning Closer to Learners at Mwanga Primary School
At Mwanga Primary School, it is hard to miss the brightly painted words and pictures covering classroom walls and the outside. From the alphabet and numbers to names of animals, objects and simple sentences, almost every available space around the school premises has been turned into a learning resource.
For many learners, these walls have become part of their daily lessons. Whether waiting for class to begin, moving between lessons or simply looking around , leaners are constantly surrounded by words that help them practice reading, spelling and sentence construction.
The print-rich walls were introduced with support from World Vision to create an environment where learning continues beyond the teacher's lesson. Today, learners like Samantha are using the displays to strengthen literacy skills and build confidence in reading.
"The walls have helped me learn new words and make sentences. Before, I found reading difficult, but now it is much easier," says Samantha.
Samantha, who dreams of becoming a nurse, says the improvement has also been reflected in her academic performance.
"I used to be on position 10 in class, but now I am among the top learners and often get single-digit positions," says Samantha.
For Alex, a Standard 6 learner, the print-rich walls have helped him remember what he learns in class.
"I can now remember words more easily and confidently answer questions during lessons," says Alex.
According to Linoce Pensulo, a teacher at Mwanga Primary School, learners are showing noticeable improvements in literacy because they interact with the learning materials every day.
"Many pupils can now read better and identify different words and objects. The print-rich walls provide constant opportunities for practice, which helps learners retain what they learn," says Pensulo.
Pensulo says the school previously faced challenges in accessing adequate teaching and learning materials. The print-rich walls have helped address some of these challenges while creating a more engaging learning environment.
Beyond the school premises, the initiative has also encouraged parents and community members to take a greater interest in children's education after seeing improvements in learners' reading abilities and classroom participation.
