Strengthening Child Well-being through Faith-Based Collaboration in Chongwe East

By Teddy Mofya, Development Facilitator - CESP, Zambia
In many parts of Zambia, children continue to face significant challenges that threaten their safety, development, and future. Early marriages, teen pregnancies, and harmful cultural practices remain deeply rooted in some communities, often compounded by weak child protection systems and limited access to support services. These issues not only jeopardise the well-being of boys and girls but also hinder broader efforts toward sustainable development and social cohesion.
Recognising the critical role that faith leaders play in shaping community values and mobilising support, World Vision Zambia, through the Faith for Transformation initiative in Chongwe East Area Programme, joined hands with Hope Matters Zambia to strengthen local capacity for child protection and community development.

As part of this collaboration, 60 faith leaders were enrolled in a Diploma programme in Christian Studies and Community Development offered by Nation-to-Nation University (USA). The training aimed to equip participants with theological knowledge, practical skills in agriculture and entrepreneurship, and tools to respond to climate-related challenges. More importantly, it sought to empower faith leaders to become advocates for child well-being and agents of change within their congregations and communities.
The first cohort of 24 leaders has since graduated, now serving over 1,800 community members, an increase from 1,100 prior to the training. Several graduates have initiated support groups and cooperatives, accessed local development funds, and introduced alternative livelihoods such as livestock rearing to reduce dependency on traditional farming.
“I am glad the training helped improve my evangelism skills,” shared Pastor Amos. “Our membership has grown from 86 to 137.”
“This programme strengthened my administrative and agricultural skills,” noted Pastor Andrew, who also serves as a civic leader. “I now maintain better records both at church and in my public role.”
These outcomes reflect the potential of faith-based partnerships to contribute meaningfully to child protection and community resilience. By working alongside local government structures and other stakeholders, the initiative is helping to build stronger referral systems and safer environments for children.

“The trained pastors will help form a stronger child protection referral system at the community level,” said Rita, Cluster Programme Manager, Chongwe East AP. “We are grateful for the collaboration that is creating sustainable change.”
Dr. Evans Lupiya, District Commissioner for Chongwe, also acknowledged the value of multi-sectoral engagement:
“Thank you, World Vision, for working alongside the government to develop communities and families that live in peace.”
While challenges remain, the partnership between World Vision Zambia, Hope Matters Zambia, and local faith leaders continues to demonstrate how collective action can foster hope, dignity, and opportunity for every child.
