KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Chikungunya virus (spread by same kinds of mosquitoes that spread zika virus and dengue fever) outbreak in eastern Sudan. The federal Ministry of Health confirmed that 6,250 people had been infected by the mosquito-borne virus in Kassala state.
  • Strain on access to food by poor households due to a combination of factors such as reduced purchasing power and high inflation. Food assistance for the most vulnerable families is therefore critical.
  • The state of South Kordofan is on high alert for the possibility of fall armyworms that attack crops such as sorghum, a main staple in Sudan.
  • As the heavy rains settle, it has left families in Blue Nile needing humanitarian assistance. There have been increased cases of malaria as well, and a concern over shortage of malaria medicines.
