World Humanitarian Day - Celebrating our unsung heroes

Saturday, August 18, 2018

When conflict broke out in South Sudan in December 2013, hundreds of thousands fled south towards neighbouring Uganda. The growing humanitarian situation in South Sudan has now displaced close to One-million people into refugee settlements in Northern Uganda. UNHCR estimates that 61% of the total number of South Sudanese refugees in Uganda are children. World Vision has since January 2014 been responding to the growing refugee crisis in northern Uganda and now has a team of over 500 staff carrying out various response activities.

August 19th marks World Humanitarian Day, an awareness day designated by the United Nations to recognise humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. This years’ theme is a continuation of the #NotATarget campaign, which aims to bring attention to the millions of civilians affected by armed conflict every day. Below we share with you photos and quotes from some of our humanitarian workers in West Nile; the unsung heroes who brave the challenges and the privilege to work in the communities helping the most vulnerable.
