Menstrual Hygiene

Menstrual Hygiene Day 2019

28 May 2019

The vision behind Menstrual Hygiene Day is a world in which every woman and girl is able to manage her menstruation in a hygienic way- in safety, privacy, and with dignity- wherever they are.

May 28th, 2019 is Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day); a day dedicated to bringing awareness around the vital role that good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) plays in empowering women and adolescent girls worldwide to become all that they can be.

MH Day is celebrated in May because May is the fifth month of the year, and women's menstruation period lasts an average of five days. The 28th was chosen because the average menstrual cycle is 28 days.

The 2019 theme for Menstrual Hygiene Day is focused on accelerating advocacy and action in every community worldwide.

Action must be taken to change negative social norms and practices, to sustain progress on menstrual hygiene (MH) education, and to ensure access to MH products. The silence and social stigma surrounding menstruation will only be broken once women and girls, along with their families and communities are educated with information concerning menstrual hygiene.

It's time to educate. It's time for action!
