Access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and basic hygiene services is essential for health, dignity, and well-being. A new research study conducted in Abassi sub-district, Hawija District, highlights the serious challenges communities face in accessing safe and reliable WASH services and the direct impact on public health.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health & Well-Being), and World Vision Iraq’s WASH Business Plan (2026–2030), the study gathered evidence through:

  • 200 household surveys
  • Key informant interviews
  • Focus group discussions with men, women, boys, and girls
  • Direct field observations

The findings reveal significant gaps in water quality, sanitation, hygiene practices, and inclusive access to services. Nearly half of surveyed households rely on unsafe open water sources, while only 1% reported access to safely managed drinking water. Inadequate sanitation, limited hygiene facilities, and weak service coordination continue to expose communities to increased health and protection risks.

The research also highlights the disproportionate impact on women, children, older people, and people with disabilities, emphasising the urgent need for inclusive and sustainable WASH investments.

The study outlines short-, medium-, and long-term priority actions, including rehabilitation of water supply systems, hygiene promotion programmes, improved sanitation facilities, strengthened water quality monitoring, and enhanced coordination among stakeholders.

This research provides evidence to support targeted interventions, advocacy efforts, and coordinated action toward safer, healthier, and more resilient communities in Hawija District.
