On February 6, two earthquakes of 7.7 and 7.5 magnitudes occurred in Türkiye’s Kahramanmaraş Province, followed by subsequent 6.4 and 5.8 magnitude quakes on February 20. 11 provinces in Türkiye’s southeast region and neighboring Syria were impacted. The tremors were felt by millions of people across the area up to 1,000 km (621 miles) away. According to government and UN sources, more than 55,190 people have died, and 129,490 have been injured.
OCHA’s flash appeals for Türkiye and Syria collectively note that 17.9 million people have been directly affected, 10.1 million need humanitarian assistance, and the humanitarian community is asking for US$ 1.398 billion to address the urgent needs of people.
