Two-Hour Water Treks End as World Vision Brings Clean Water to Krachi West
By Vivian Adu, Communications Officer
For years, women and children in Nkyenekyene and Sabaja, two communities in the Krachi West Municipality of Ghana’s Oti Region, walked up to two hours daily in search of safe drinking water.
That burden has now been lifted with the commissioning of two solar-powered mechanised water systems by World Vision Ghana through the generous support of World Vision Korea.
The systems, officially handed over during a ceremony in Nkyenekyene, mark a significant milestone in improving access to clean water and enhancing the quality of life for nearly 10,000 residents.

The event brought together community leaders, government officials, and development partners to celebrate what many described as a transformative moment.
Irvine Aboagye, Southern Regional Manager of World Vision Ghana, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to child well-being through sustainable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services. He noted that the project aligns with World Vision’s broader goal of achieving universal WASH coverage and reflects accountability to donors and sponsors.
Constructed at a cost of USD 90,000, the two systems include 16 water points and 32 taps, extending supply to schools and promoting better hygiene among pupils. Aboagye also emphasized the importance of sustainability, urging local Water and Sanitation Management Teams to adopt the “Pay-As-You-Fetch” model to fund ongoing maintenance.

Speaking on behalf of the communities, Assembly Member for Nkyenekyene, Moses Putan, expressed heartfelt gratitude.
“Women in this community used to walk for two hours just to fetch water. Today, that struggle has ended,” he added.
In concluding his remarks, Aboagye urged all stakeholders including traditional authorities, assembly members and local institutions to work together to safeguard the investments and ensure long-term sustainability.
“Together, we can continue transforming lives and improving the well-being of the people of Krachi West and the Oti Region at large,” he added.
The project in Sabaja was also inaugurated and handed over on the same day.
