ABSA Marathon: Shows the power of partnerships

On September 6, 2025, a powerful movement took place, one that shows the importance of helping girls in need, fostering partnerships, and embracing collaboration. The 2025 Absa Marathon became more than just a race; it transformed into a rallying point for social change, with World Vision Zambia playing a vital role. The event, organised by ABSA Bank Zambia PLC, aimed to raise awareness and resources to combat menstrual poverty, a barrier that keeps many girls from pursuing their education and reaching their full potential.
World Vision Zambia aims to support 5,000 girls in rural communities with reusable sanitary pads through the Flow Fund Campaign. This campaign thrives on the power of partnerships, demonstrating how organisations could join forces for a cause greater than themselves.

The marathon attracted nearly 8,000 runners from across Zambia and even drew participation from 20 other countries.
Absa Bank Zambia Managing Director Mizinga Melu emphasised the significance of the event, saying,
“The Absa marathon is special because it addresses a vulnerable issue, girls missing school because of menstrual poverty. It’s a cause that requires collective effort, and today, we are proud to stand together for change.”
Her words resonated with many, highlighting the importance of collaboration in tackling social challenges.
“When girls are empowered with access to menstrual hygiene products, they stay in school, gain confidence, and become agents of change in their communities,” she says.
World Vision Zambia’s National Director, Marc Nosbach, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Absa Bank and all partners involved.
“We are thankful to Absa for walking this journey with us,” he stated. “Their support exemplifies how partnerships can amplify impact and bring about tangible change in the lives of girls who need it most.”
Nosbach’s words reinforced the message that no single organisation can solve such complex issues alone; it is through unity and shared vision that meaningful progress is achieved.
The Absa Marathon showed that collaboration, powered by organisations, corporations, and individuals, can create ripple effects that inspire hope and foster sustainable development.
As the event concluded, it was clear that the real victory was in the partnerships formed and the lives touched. The message was loud and clear: when we come together to help those in need, especially vulnerable girls, we pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future for Zambia and beyond.
