The national poor educational infrastructure, particularly in rural Zambia, where it directly contributes to high learning poverty rates, severe overcrowding, and low pupil retention, has received urgent attention with World Vision Zambia’s Board of Directors accelerating its Timange Legacy Project to construct a much-needed classroom block at Situnga Primary School in the remote Senanga District, Western Province.

The project, which seeks to raise $50,000recently received a significant financial boost: a generous K130,000 (approximately $5,000) donation from Bridging Gap Solutions (BGS). This gift substantially closes the funding gap for the construction of a new 1x3 classroom block, which will provide a safe, dignified, and conducive learning environment for hundreds of vulnerable children.

Dire Statistics Fuel the Urgency

The plight of Situnga Primary is a little example of a wider national issue, where the expansion of free education has overwhelmed existing, fragile infrastructure. National statistics highlight the severity of the deficit and its direct impact on learning outcomes:

  • Learning Poverty: The World Bank estimates that nearly 99% of Zambian children are affected by learning poverty, meaning they cannot read and understand a simple, age-appropriate text by age 10.

  • Overcrowding: The national pupil-teacher ratio at the primary level remains high, with official figures citing approximately 38:1 (though rural schools often face significantly worse ratios), severely impeding quality instruction.

  • Infrastructure Gaps: Many schools in remote areas operate in dilapidated structures, or even makeshift shelters, lacking basic sanitation and running water, which is a major barrier to school attendance and retention, especially for girls.

Corporate Generosity Spurs Campaign

The timely donation from BGS provides critical momentum to the World Vision Zambia Board's initiative. World Vision Zambia's Board of Directors’ Representative, Pastor Jordan Benjamin Moyowambuya, expressed gratitude while issuing a call for the public and private sector to join the final push.

“This generous donation of K130,000 from Bridging Gap Solutions helps us bridge the gap to our $50,000 target for a new 1x3 classroom block at Situnga Primary School in Senanga District. We are thankful, but the finish line requires a collective sprint. We need you to join this noble cause,” says Pastor Moyowambuya.

And BGS Representative, Rodasi Gomareaffirmed the company’s commitment to uplifting the nation's most disadvantaged children.

"Education is the foundation of national development. Our company is built on the principle of bridging gaps, and this gift is precisely thata legacy for the children," says Goma.

The World Vision Board Chairperson, Ms. Mabel Mung'omba, praised the corporate partner’s leadership and reiterated the project's transformative goal.

"Situnga's children currently learn in conditions that threaten their dignity and their future. BGS has shown their commitment; now is the time for all of us to step up! Every partner, every individual donor, is helping us to build hope, brick by brick, into the lives of these children," says Ms. Mung'omba.

The World Vision Zambia National Director, Mr. Marc Nosbach, highlighted the impact the completed classroom block will have on the community.

“The Timange Legacy Project is about providing a quality start to education. This new block will directly improve the learning experience for over 400 pupils. Help us bridge the remaining gap and make this classroom a reality for the vulnerable children of Senanga,” says Mr. Nosbach.

The Timange Legacy Project stands as a critical private-sector-led effort to tackle Zambia's education infrastructure crisis, proving that collective action can transform futures for children in the most underserved regions.
