Solar Energy: Lighting Up Lives

In the rural community of Manga, life is undergoing a remarkable transformation, thanks to the powerful impact of solar energy and improved access to clean water, both brought about by World Vision Zambia’s Chikwa Energy and WASH project. For years, Manga was left behind, lacking basic services such as electricity and safe water, which hindered development and limited opportunities for families. Today, the community is experiencing a new dawn of hope and growth.

A shining example of this change is 47-year-old Makiness Nyirongo. Once limited by the absence of electricity, Makiness now runs a thriving frozen food business powered entirely by solar energy. She started with just K500 ($21 US Dollars) and a small freezer, which she installed using the solar grid.
"I began with a small freezer at home. Now I sell sausages, dressed chickens, and eggs to the whole community," she explains proudly. Her success has created ripples across Manga; within three months, her business expanded six times over. This growth has even led to the emergence of new entrepreneurs like Esnart, who now operates a restaurant selling products from Makiness's business. "We never imagined a restaurant could thrive here, but since we received power, our community has more visitors," she says.

The solar power has done more than light up homes; it has become a catalyst for economic growth and improved livelihoods. Makiness plans to build a shop at the local market as her business continues to flourish.
"The income helps me pay for household needs, including washing soap, clothing, and supporting my children’s education," she shares. For the residents of Manga, the arrival of electricity feels like a miracle. "We cannot believe we have this power," says Makiness.
Evidence of this new life is visible in her deep freezer filled with frozen foods and children enjoying treats like Freezits, a simple pleasure made possible by reliable power.

Alongside the solar energy, the project has significantly improved access to clean water, which has transformed hygiene and sanitation practices in the community. Boreholes and water points have been installed, providing safe, reliable drinking water that saves families hours of fetching water from distant sources. This has led to cleaner homes and a decline in waterborne diseases, particularly among children. Families now wash their hands regularly, maintain better hygiene, and enjoy healthier lives. Schools in Manga also benefit from this access, with children able to drink clean water and practice good sanitation, creating healthier learning environments.
The combined impact of electricity and clean water is creating lasting change in Manga. It’s more than just infrastructure; it’s a foundation for healthier, more resilient communities where children can grow, learn, and dream bigger. Through these interventions, World Vision Zambia is not only illuminating homes but sparking hope and opportunity, building a brighter future for rural families and children in Manga and beyond.
