Provincial and district leaders learn about new law on disaster response

Friday, June 5, 2015

Leaders and members of district and provincial authorities studied the newly-issued Law on Disaster Preparedness and Response at a conference on May 5 in the northern province of Thanh Hoa.

The paticipants were equipped with knowledge of major changes with emphasis on issues such as early warning, disaster risks, and responsibility of response and rescue in the context of increasing climate change  impact. After the event, they will disseminate the information to local communities for them to better respond to natural disasters.

Vice Director of Agriculture and Rural Development Department, Mr Tran Quang Trung, chaired the event, which was attended by the participants from relevant agencies and authorities of 27 districts and cities.

World Vision’s Coastal Areas of Thanh Hoa Province Resilient to Natural Disasters (CATREND) grant project, in cooperation with Steering Committee on disaster prevention, search and rescue, and Centre of disaster prevention and risk reduction under the Department of Irrigation, organised the conference.

The Law on Disaster Preparedness and Response, which was passed by the National Assembly in June 2013, has become effective since May 2014. The law consists of six chapters with 47 articles, regulating disaster prevention and response activities as well as roles and responsibilities of government bodies, organisations, families and individuals in implementing them.
