Driven by Compassion: How a Driver's Initiative Stitched Hope into 30 Young Lives

At Sampson Community Basic School in the Sekyere Afram Plains of the Ashanti Region, a powerful story of local leadership unfolded not from an office desk, but from behind the steering wheel.
William Kwaku Cham is a driver with World Vision Ghana's Sekyere Afram Plains Area Programme. In over a decade of service, he has travelled countless roads in the region. But it was a quieter observation: noticing children missing school simply because they had no uniform to wear, that moved him to act well beyond the boundaries of his daily role.
Drawing on his personal network, William reached out to a local philanthropist and tailor based in Effiduase, Sekyere East District, and made his case. The response was generous. Thirty brand-new school uniform sets — 15 for girls and 15 for boys, each valued at [1]GHS 150.00 each — were donated to the school's most vulnerable pupils, totaling GHS 4,500.00. Alongside the uniforms came 500 exercise books and a supply of pens, erasers, and pencils, bringing the total value of the donation to GHS 5,850.00. It was a thoughtful, complete package: not just clothing, but the tools children need to learn.
With coordination support from Area Programme Manager Priscilla Ntim Babae and the wider Sekyere Afram Plains AP team, the items were carefully distributed to the targeted beneficiaries. The effort stands as vivid proof that meaningful change does not wait on titles or job descriptions; every member of a team can be a genuine agent of transformation.

A Moment Rich in Emotion
Though modest in scale, the distribution was rich in feeling. As children received their uniforms, their excitement was impossible to miss. Teachers expressed sincere appreciation, noting that financial pressure makes purchasing uniforms genuinely difficult for many families. The intervention eased that burden and with it, restored something harder to measure: a sense of belonging and dignity.
Mrs. Abena Owusu, a teacher at the school, spoke for many when she said: "Seeing the children receive their new uniforms brought smiles to many faces and gave them a renewed sense of pride and excitement about coming to school."
The children themselves said it most simply. Isaac, proudly tucking in his new shirt: "Having my own uniform makes me feel proud and ready to learn." Ama, smiling brightly: "I want to come to school regularly now that I'm dressed like my friends."
Their words reveal more than gratitude. They speak of restored confidence and renewed motivation, the quiet but profound returns on an investment of GHS 5,850.00 and one man's willingness to ask.

A Testament to Community-Driven Development
This initiative is a testament to the strength of community-driven development. By mobilizing local resources through a personal relationship, William demonstrated that sustainable impact often begins not with institutional funding, but with individuals who are willing to go the extra mile.
The partnership between the Effiduase philanthropist and World Vision Ghana's Sekyere Afram Plains AP also illustrates the value of leveraging local networks to address educational barriers. It complements broader programme priorities, including the Creation Care project, by embodying the principles of shared responsibility and collective action that underpin lasting community transformation.
As the Sekyere Afram Plains Area Programme continues its mission, William's story offers an enduring reminder: sometimes, the road to change begins with a driver who chooses to steer compassion into action.
