Using drones to boost tree cover and restore degraded land

Thursday, October 27, 2022

World Vision in collaboration with the Kenya Flying Labs has embraced the use of drones in the aerial dispersion of seed balls to increase tree cover in the coastal region of Kenya. This initiative seeks to restore degraded land, made bare by deforestation as well as through colonisation by the Prosopis Juliflora invasive species, which is commonly known as the Mathenge Shrub in Kenya. The seed balls being dispersed contain indigenous tree seeds that have been wrapped in a mixture of soil and compost, then dried to protect them from being eaten by birds and animals.
