Monday, July 30, 2018

World Vision Uganda has kickstarted its response to the Congo refugee crisis in South West Uganda. In partnership with World Food Programme,  World Vision has reached out to over 100,000 refugees with monthly food assistance at Kyaka and Kyangwali refugee settlements. Between January to July 2018, there have been 92,650 new arrivals from Democratic Republic Of Congo into Uganda fleeing fighting between rival forces.

Refugees continue to arrive with a weekly average of 700-1000 new arrivals. World Vision fears that this number could rise as the DRC prepares for the general elections later in the year.

According to statistics from UNHCR, the UN agency directly in charge of refugees, Kyaka II Refugee Settlement is now home to some 51, 884 refugees from DRC, while Kyangwali Refugee Settlement has an additional 59,134.
