The establishment of a Child Protection Network of 10 NGOs advocating for child protection and an efficient child protection system was the highlight of festivities in Armenia celebrating International Children’s Day this June.“There are a lot of organisations in the field. Only through raising awareness of each other’s work and co-operation can we achieve tangible results,” said Amalya Martirosyan, a World Vision Armenia social worker.

Recent innovations to address the needs of vulnerable children more supportively, including a database, reference book and terminological dictionary for local partners, governmental organisations and the general public, were celebrated.

Also applauded was the development of a hot line, which offers vulnerable children and their parents psychological, social and material assistance.

International Children’s Day was marked by public events such as exhibitions, shows, performances and seminars that gave stage to children, including children with disabilities and living in especially difficult circumstances.

The paintings of eight children with disabilities were displayed at the four-day exhibition that began June 1st in Gevorgyan Gallery in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital city. The paintings were the outcome of art therapists’ work with children. Art therapy for children with disabilities is available at all World Vision’s child centres in Armenia.

“Treating children with art is no less effective than with other methods. Through these paintings children express their emotions, dreams and unique understanding of the world,” said art therapist Armine Arakelyan, who initiated the exhibition.
