World Vision stresses hypertension as urgent health issue in Armenia
Hypertension was identified as an urgent public health issue in a survey recently presented by World Vision Armenia at an International Congress in the capital Yerevan.More than 1,700 renowned doctors from across the world, including Armenia, discussed key health issues affecting Armenia. The congress also provided a platform for discussions on improving the healthcare sector and enhancing public awareness of current medical issues.
Hypertension in Armenia should be considered as an urgent public health issue.
“Hypertension (abnormally high blood pressure) in Armenia should be considered as an urgent public health issue. This is currently not the case, especially in rural areas, where people rarely visit a doctor when suffering of hypertension,” said World Vision Armenia health coordinator Anush Sahakyan.
The survey, "Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment and Control of Hypertension and the Quality of care at rural communities” also highlighted the necessity to raise public awareness about the illness in rural communities, in particular among men, as the mortality rate of people suffering from heart diseases is almost 2 times higher among men as compared to women.
The survey, conducted by the Medical Outreach Teams (MOT), details the prevalence of hypertension in Armenia and offers means of prevention and proper management of the condition in communities where MOT is functioning.
In follow-up discussions with Armenian Family Medicine professionals, World Vision health representatives emphasised the importance of building the capacity of local doctors and nurses. They also stressed doctors and nurses’ need to encourage their patient’s to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
The Congress was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Healthcare.
