The Qanaqer-Zeytun community in Yerevan was selected due to its high level of poverty and unemployment, large number of vulnerable families, and children aged two to ten, as well as lack of adequate infrastructure and weak civil society.

Community head Arayik Kotanjyan says the most important aspect of this new programme is that it aims to build the capacity of the community to solve problems on its own.

“Our experience has shown that projects are successful only when the community actively participates and even leads the implementation process. The main focus of the new ADP is on community development and civil society creation,” said Mark Kelly, National Director of World Vision Armenia.

...projects are successful only when the community actively participates and even leads the implementation process “World Vision is an organisation that is never satisfied with only what has been achieved – it always looks for new opportunities to expand its scope of work. The opening of a new development programme in Yerevan is an example”, said the Minister of Social Affairs during his speech at the opening ceremony.

The new ADP, funded by World Vision Canada, will help to sustain the past years of successful cooperation with World Vision’s partners - government representatives, local authorities, Armenian Apostolic Church and other NGOs- who have asserted their strong commitment to continue working together in various fields.

“The bridge World Vision can create among the Government, local self-governing bodies and other NGOs is a cornerstone for achieving greater results. In 2003, we had only four schools in our inclusive education programme and a few special educators. Today there are already 21 schools and more than 500 children in mainstream education. Around 100 special educators, psychologists, and speech therapists are now engaged thanks to our productive work with World Vision\'\', said Kamo Areyan, the Vice-Mayor of Yerevan city.

The opening ceremony of the ADP had the honour of hosting Vic Darchinyan, a well-known World Champion of Boxing, who as a role model for many people in Armenia came to encourage community members.
